From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Holism (from Greek ὅλος holos "all, whole, entire") is the idea that various systems (e.g. physical, biological, social) should be viewed as wholes, not merely as a collection of parts. The term "holism" was coined by Jan Smuts in his 1926 book Holism and Evolution.

It is through the use of theory that one does just that. Theory provides the nurse with a framework from which to understand and make meaning out of complex experiences. Theory also provides guidance in practice—guidance to consider alternate explanations for what is observed and alternate ways of addressing concerns. A recent grounded theory study by the current author explored this question, interviewing experienced Osteopathic practitioners about their views of holism, how it was implemented and its relationshipwith biomedical educationand practice[1]. Holism (from holos “all, whole, entire”) is the idea that systems (physical, biological, chemical, social, economic, mental, linguistic) and their properties should be viewed as wholes, not just as a collection of parts. The term h olism was coined by Jan Smuts. The general definition of holism as stated by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary is “a theory that the universe and especially living nature is correctly seen in terms of interacting wholes (as of living organisms) that are more than the mere sum of elementary particles”. Holism in general terms (whether in science, sociology, economics, linguistics or philosophy) is the idea that all the properties of a given system cannot be determined or explained by its component parts alone, but the system as a whole determines in an important way how the parts behave. In philosophy, the principle of Holism (which comes from the Greek "holos" meaning "all" or "total") was concisely summarized by Aristotle in his "Metaphysics": "The whole is more than the sum of its parts ". Holism has often been taken as the thesis that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Several different interpretations of this epigram prove relevant to physics, as we shall see.
